my coral reef jewellery series was inspired by the beauty and richness of the Great Barrier Reef, I found that coral reefs evince several of the fundamental aesthetic principles underlying successful artwork - rhythm, pattern, contrast, movement and unity were there in abundance, and their attraction was irresistible.
the " silver reef "
this piece was my last in the Barrier Reef series and is the culmination of many years of making jewellery and sculptured pieces based on the reef, a series that had begun when I went snorkelling on a coral reef for the first time, like most people I was utterly bowled over by its intense beauty. In this piece, which is my homage to the reef I tried to approximate as closely as I could the intricacy of a section of coral reef or bommie and the variety of species to be found in a small area, this profusion of line and form and, of course, the underlying magic of the relationship between structure and function.
in the section above is a brain coral, a complex of sponges, a soft coral, giant clam and various anemones and algaes.
in this section we see a giant clam, a starfish, some staghorn coral in the centre and an assortment of corals, sponges and anemones.
