Rainbow Lorikeet

Trichoglossus haematodus
This strikingly coloured and aptly named small parrot is common in the coastal regions of northern and eastern Australia, they are also common from Indonesia across the south west Pacific to Vanuatu. They are very gregarious, mostly seen in noisy, active flocks of around 20 birds when feeding but roosting at night in large flocks of perhaps thousands, Here their enthusiastic screeching is heard throughout the day in the warmer months, I find them cheerful and lighthearted and their incessant chatter, circus acrobatics and enthusiasm for life are a welcome tonic. Size 30 cm.

This mob have taken over my neighbours improvised bird feeder, the photo illustrates perfectly why the appellation "Rainbow" has been applied to them.
